Kraig Schroth is a guy who likes food, cooking, music, beer, cocktails, board games, camping, and a bunch more stuff.  Professionally a keyboard jockey, Kraig spends a lot of time working on cloud infrastructure and architecture, and herding cats.

Everyone "knows" what a Viking is...

The word 'viking' comes from the Old Norse word Vikingr.  This word was imported into Old English as wīcing but long since extinct in Middle English and loaned again into english in the 19th century.

Old Norse víking (“marauding, piracy”) itself is from Old Norse vík (“inlet, cove, fjord”) + -ing (“one belonging to”, “one who frequents”) (the -r is the nominative desinence). Thus, “one from or who frequents the sea’s inlets.”  Or "one from the fjords."

A vagrant?

A “vagrant” in modern English is at best an uncouth method to describe someone without a home. A wanderer. Somehow, something tragically less than others. But it wasn’t always the case.

Vagrant entered modern English from Middle English, itself already a loan from Anglo-Norman and even farther back Old French. It actually shares the same Proto-Indoeuropean root as Walk (*walg-).

I much prefer to celebrate that original meaning. I wander, I explore. Do I always have the best ideas on where/when/why? No. Sometimes I make flat out stupid decisions, but hopefully I can still share with you the gems I find along the way.
